BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE BABY SHOWER

It’s been a long, hard, cold winter this year, so this “BABY IT’S COLD OUTSIDE” was the perfect theme for Jodie’s baby shower.  Hosted in Niagara-On-The-Lake, the skies set the perfect snowy backdrop to her winter wonderland themed shower.

The centrepiece of the event was the sweeping aqua sweets table, styled with many of our vintage rentals.

We had cake pops in a galvanized tub, wood cake stands, winter white candy in our gorge aqua compotes, and silver kisses in blue vintage ruffle candy dishes. A galvanized 2-tier rack held striped container with caramel corn.  And a special “flag” marked the Nanny’s blueberry dessert.  Filled with details, but none more fun than our vintage cigar barrel holding CANDY CIGARS!!!

More details like the sweets pennant hanging from our tri-fold frame just gave reason for guest to pause and take it all in.  Feeling pampered, I am sure.

Snowflake decor …both plastic and real ….framed the backdrop with  winter windows-scapes.  And Jodie made a homespun bunting out of shades of blue and lace for the table skirt.

But it did not stop at the sweets table….there was a warm up bev stations with cocoa, coffee and hot tea as well.  All of the displays were our vintage rentals showcasing vintage compotes with marshmallows, sprinkles, caramels and peppermint.  Wooden boxes held the cocoa and tea packets, and cute wooden chalkboards labeled the station.

More vintage chalkboards designated the game areas….where guest pulled aqua twine from our vintage baby pram to cut to the length their guess of mom-to-be’s tummy measurement!!!

It might have been really cold outside, but it was a warm welcome for soon coming Baby Tristan!

Short and Sweet

I love this vintage cut glass cake stand from the 60s. For extra drama, I tucked in a vintage platform riser below to add extra wow.  This riser base has hand carved roses and is painted a clean pearl white with a lovely sheen.

It is also fantastic to put under a vintage 3-tier stand to add one more layer to which you can place more cupcakes!

And an excellent solution standing alone for large sized cakes.  (Vintage cake stands only averaged 9-11 inches as they just didn’t make big ol’ cakes back in the day.)

This is prefect for a round table display!!

This is available for rent in the GTA/TORONTO, CANADA area.

Tiny Details Deliver Big Wow in our VINTAGE BALLERINA Styled Sweets Table

When invited to partner with renowned baker Christina McKenzie of The Cocoa Cakery, I jumped at the opportunity. It was for the prestigious High Tea Soiree in Toronto and touted as an event for Posh Mommies and showcasing “the top purveyors in the industry.” A bit intimidating to a company who is less than a year old…yes! Did we leap at the chance, you bet!

We chose the Vintage Ballerina Theme for one of our displays. The moment we thought of it, it was a natural…and all of my pieces and parts of vintage treasure lie in wait for just such a perfect theme.

I was thrilled for a chance to showcase my personal favourite, FENTON GLASS. And in one of its finest patterns — Milk Glass fanciness called Silver Crest. It’s identified by a shiny white glass with various embellishments and edged in a clear rim that tips the ruffled edge. It is beyond stunning and the ruffle immediately screams…tutu!!

Next I needed a tall, strong piece to hold the “hero”…the awesome couture cake in soft pinks, metallic golds and creams. Simple in colour, ornate in design. A work of art by any standard. So I found a stunning clear ruffle edge stand to take centre stage…as a gorgeous frame encasing art.

The moment I perched the cake atop that stand, it took my breath away. (Ok, I am a vintage glass geek, admittedly, but I am certain I let out a loud gasp.) It was perfection. As if it were made for that moment. The clear stand paired with the clear rim of the silver crest. Yes, it was a moment…: )

To layer the stand, I tucked in a small round, French, gold frame to echo the gold frames in the cakes design.

Next, we needed a stand to hold the hand painted flower cookies and mini ruffle, pink buttercream cupcakes. It’s all about varying the height, so I used a 2-tier Fenton ruffle stand, switching out the hardware to gold. Again…felt the wow. One more white ruffled mini plate…I just added a clear dome, to feature three mini cupcakes and a ruffled rose. Atop we tied a pink ribbon and below I nested a vintage pink hanky. Now, it was time to break up those ruffles a bit. So, a pink stand from the 1920s fit the bill to hold more cookies…but could we get some height on that please.

To the rescue, another fave, my silver swan mini cut glass stand. It sat nicely atop the pink stand to feature a rose petal cupcake. Graceful and purdy it was.

Hmmm…what next. Now comes the small details. I added a vintage mirror under the pink stand so you could actually SEE the amazing thistle detail so careful designed nearly a century ago. A simple vintage brooch would seal the deal for just a wee more bling. You could sense the ballerina about to attach the brooch to her sash.

We added a few long neck milk glass bud vases with ruffled nosegay bouquets, and it was done. Well, until I remembered my coveted mini swan. The delicate figurine would again bring it all home. Echoing the other swan feature, hinting at the famous Swan Lake Ballet, and just lending it’s grace and elegance to the set, as it carried three tiny rose buds. Honestly, I could have stared at that itty-bitty swan all day. It was the cherry on top.

All of this beauty needed just the right foundation…and that it had in an antique French Vanity I had acquired with this very tablescape in mind. We tucked flowers and vintage hankies in the drawers on one side and soft pink tulle on the other. A pennant would hold the name for all ballet lovers to see….”First Position”. It was a table indeed perfect for some precious little ballerina’s first birthday.

I can’t wait to recreate this for a special little girl. If you are in the GTA, all of the pieces in the following photos are available for rent at

Make the Vintage Sweets Table your Wedding Day Centrepiece!!! WOW IT WITH VINTAGENESS!!!

Wow, have we been having fun creating all kind of wonderful VINTAGE SWEETS TABLES and vintage decor for the 2013 summer wedding season.  Barn weddings are highly sought venues, and no wonder with all of the fun things you can do with decor.  But thanks to Amy Atals, it is the vintage sweets table that has become the centrepiece of the wedding.  And that is why we are “here”.

If gorgeous sweets in a sinful variety of offerings hasn’t been enough, well, now the presentation will surely have you counting down for dessert.

We have booked rentals for some incredible venues that make you wish you could be the bride.  Barns, Botanical Gardens, Historical Homes, Backyard Flings, Fancy Halls, and Wooded Gardens.  Don’t you just wish you had one of those R.S.V.P. cards in YOUR hands!!?!?!  I do!!

But it’s not just the venues getting all the limelight, it’s also that all-important, ever pinned about,  little sweets table.

If you live on Pinterest, you already know that Pie Bars are very hot!  Home-made with the name of the aunt or friend who baked it up…right there for all to see.

Late-night fun goes over the top with yummy gourmet donut buffets, and gourmet popcorn bars.  Bundt cake come-backs, cake pops looking like brides and grooms, milk glass candy buffets and the sweetheart of all styling, apothecary show-boating with decorative labels.  All hot and  so fun for the guests.

But it doesn’t stop there.  You need to set the stage.  Tablescaping your sweets table takes you from the “done” to the “you”.  Make it personal!!  Get crazy and fun.  Include things you love.  You make the rules.

For instance, instead of just apothecary jars, mix it up!!  Add some vintage cake stands that have icing rims and show off your truffles and candy there.  We have a few combos of vintage glass compotes that stack to bring the 3-tier cake stand look to candy!!  Who could resist this?

Use unexpected pieces like vintage vases for cake pops and cotton candy, pastry trays of vintage glass for chocolate-dipped marshmallows (on a stick) and have a carmel apples buffet. Bring some big wow with a vintage (it must be awesome) punch bowl for gourmet popcorn or candy pretzels…or even colourfully bagged cookies.

Put Candy in your Vases, and Flowers in your Candy Bowls!!!  MIX IT UP!

There are so many ways to surprise your guests, run with it!

But don’t forget the non-edible staging of your table.  That’s where we really shine!  Add victorian shelfs to stack your pies on, or bird cages, rustic birds, vintage mirrors, frames and candelabras.  Put cupcakes on vintage mirrors for a beautiful and cost effective surprise.

LAYER, LAYER, LAYER!!!  My three secrets for styling the perfect vintage sweets table are:

Gorgeous Vintage Glass  (Cake Stands, Compotes, Trays, Vases)

Candlelight – Vintage candelabras, Cut glass Votives, hanging chandeliers will all bring the romance and sparkle

Mirrors – Vintage, fancy, lace metal edging.  It will reflect the light, add volume to the table and give the photographer something to sink his/her teeth into.

There has never been a more fun time in history, I say, to be a bride.  So, don’t miss out on  the fun.  Bling up that table.   From burlap to rhinestone studded mason jars, BRING THE ELEMENT OF WOW, FUN, SURPRISE to your sweet affair.  Embrace vintage style and watch the cameras and i-phones fly to capture the gift you are giving your guests.  It’s all about the unexpected.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Chalk Board Prose – What do we say on those fun chalk boards?

3photo[1]I love chalk boards!  And, they are one of my most popular rentals, too.  They are a great tool to show your style and personality, bring humour to an event and, well, even make a big statement if you like.

The boards themselves have personality.  We make them at Southern Charm Vintage Rentals in all sizes and shapes.  Rustic, French, Baroque, White, Cream and soon…colours.

But what the chalk board is really all about is what we write on them!  “Today as two families come together, we ask you to pick a seat, not a side”.  Says so much about the couple.

Or just cute phrases on a sweets table like “Sweet Beginnings” or “Sugah Pie” or everyone’s favourite “Love is Sweet”. I’m trying to work up some that are a little more fresh, but hey, there is a reason these are popular.  They’re good!

One of my all time faves is the one quoting a very old WWII 1940s song.  The lyrics were  :  “I Love You a Bushel and a Peck and a Hug Around the Neck”  Ok, I admit, I love it because when I was itty bitty, my mom sang it to me all the time.  But, your board should have meaning, even if everyone doesn’t get it. Make it yours!

Another oldie but goodie from that era is also my “mom and dad’s” song!  “You are my Sunshine”  Who doesn’t love that timeless sentiment?

Or maybe we look to our faith for inspiration like “What God has Joined Together….”, or simply “Faith, Hope, Love”.

And as I look into my rebel reggae years…the infamous Bob Marley in all of his understated wisdom would sing..”One Love, One Heart”.  Another reggae great, Tony Rebel, would probably write the title of his hit song, “Love ya like a Fresh Vegetable”

Go here to hear this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llgXtoKAuAM (Jah, Rastafari)

Ok, I admit it lacks a little romance.  But if you were really hungry, that would be a pretty big compliment, right?!?!  Moving on, we can always look at the classics for chalk board inspiration. The Beatles boards would tout  “I want to hold your hand” or “All you need is Love” or just put a big celebration message up that says “Twist and Shout”.  I know on my wedding day, that’s what I wanted to do!

Do you have any ideas for Chalk Boards?  Let’s hear your favorites.

Guess I’ll end with a Texas oldie from home.  We love our George Straight, so my chalk board today would say “I Cross My Heart….”

You know the rest.
